Miles Davis – “Stella By Starlight (live)” from 1964: The Complete Concert

Check out 1:52, at the very top of the first chorus in time, for a cathartic scream from the audience.

The lineup for this 1964 NAACP benefit date was:

Miles – trumpet
George Coleman – tenor saxophone
Herbie Hancock – piano
Ron Carter – bass
Tony Williams – drums

Buy Miles here to hear announcer Mort Fega’s suggestion to “wet your whistle in the lounge” during the set break.

Rock shows need announcers. And rock venues need ‘lounges’ so we can ‘wet our whistles.’ That bop crowd had the right idea.

Yeah, ‘lounges’ that don’t sell 10 oz cups of Miller Lite for 5 bucks a pop.

Also, the gig was at the Lincoln Center, or maybe Carnegie Hall. Slight difference from the Metro or Parrot’s or whatever.
